Exploring the cultural and social themes in the movie:LALSHALU

 BLOG

Hi everyone and welcome to my channel!! Today, we shall dive into the depths of great Bangladeshi cinema with one gem —Lalshalu. Ideal for the movie-goer who enjoys seeing how films are accompanied by society and culture. This is not a simple story, Lalshalu talks more about rural life as such, social manipulation and beliefs that still bind us today.

Before that just a little about Lalshalu. An adaptation of a novel by Syed Waliullah under the same name, this movie is directed by Tanvir Mokammel. Descriptive of rural Bangladesh, it deals with religious and superstitious beliefs as enmity darkness amongst the social power manipulators. This film reveals the ways those in positions of influence can exploit religion to control people.

Lalshalu is connected to the nature of Bangladeshi rural culture in a unique way. The movie does try to show the religious part of our day-to-day lives, which is a good reflection. For example, character Majid uses people's faith and superstition to cement his authority over the villagers. He converts a humble shrine to place of terror and worship, using dogma as a tool for compliance.

This is a clear-cut example of how religious figure or teaching can be put into use in order to brainwash.", Nothing explains better about the misuse of 'religious figures'/ideologies like this one. A testament to how much we will go against our culture in the pursuit of cash.

On social lines, Lalshalu bridges the gap between knowledge and illiteracy in remote rural regions. In the film, ignorance is represented by those in power within his village but Majid — with a western education and trained as a doctor (and hence somewhat of an expert on physiology) would only be classified under this same banner. And through his knowledge, he is able to trick people into serving him — showing that social hierarchy and education are just attractions ready for manipulation based on how atrocities want.

Further, the role women play in rural society is highlighted. Even characters of Rahima's ilk become a symbol for the how social and religious practices leave women prey to these power dynamics.

So, that’s it for today’s vlog on the cultural and social themes in Lalshalu. I hope this discussion has given you a deeper understanding of the film and how it reflects some important social issues. If you haven’t watched Lalshalu yet, I highly recommend it, not only for its cinematic value but for the social messages it carries.
