The Global Impact of Manga and Graphic Novels
If you haven’t heard of manga or graphic novels these days, unfortunately you’re not using the internet properly. These visual narratives have taken the internet by storm. Beyond the hype, manga and graphic novels have a significant impact on Gen Z and offer unique perspectives on the world.
Manga: The Ultimate Japanese Power Move
Manga, a Japanese version of comic books, is basically Japan’s gift to the world. Manga covers everything-romance, horror, sports, and yes, even cooking. If you can imagine it, there’s probably a manga about it. It's a buffet of art and storytelling that starts from cute high school romances to epic alien battles and beyond.
In the 2000s, manga hit the global stage. Now, even your cousin's dog has probably seen One Piece because it started in 1997 and is still ongoing. It’s THAT big. Plus, manga isn’t just about cool art. Some of the deeper ones really make you think about life. For a moment you are reading about fantasy stuff, and the next, you're questioning your entire existence. Classic manga move!
Here’s an example. Jujutsu Kaisen, a new generation manga with modern fantasy, shows us how far a sorcery can go beyond the limits. With thrilled eyes and a heart full of curiosity, Yuji Itadori, a high school student, found himself entangled in a world of curses and sorcerers. He emerges with the curse spirit and the main antagonist, Ryomen Sukuna, and tries to find a cure to break the curse spirit. Alongside his sorcerer teachers, seniors and classmates, Yuji faces numerous sacrifices in the battle against Sukuna. Every volume has a death of a sorcerer in order to kill Sukuna but there has been a surprise with unique types of sorcery that you can’t be able to imagine but you can after you read this manga. Ultimately, Yuji manages to defeat the cursed spirit and removes it from the world with a great loss of lives.
Jujutsu Kaisen manga has a significant amount of wholesomeness among sorcerers along with thriller contents which makes the readers more interested in it. Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 1 was released in 2018. Valentine E. (2023) stated on https://comicbook.com that 80 million Jujutsu Kaisen manga copies had been sold worldwide. Amazing isn’t it?
Graphic Novels: Not Just for Nerds Anymore

Graphic novels were once that thing your friend read in the corner while everyone else was talking about movies, but now? They’re everywhere. Graphic novels originated from western countries that let the readers read and visualize the whole novel at the same time. It's the same as manga with western cultures and traditions. Even the people who look down on comics now have to admit, they’re kind of smart. You’ve got universities teaching courses about them, and graphic novels even win fancy book awards. So, you know, anyone who thinks comics are just for nerds needs to, like, re-evaluate their life choices.
Bad impacts:
While manga and graphic novels have been a great source of reading books, these have drawbacks. As you know these visual narratives help to visualize out of reality, sometimes you’ll see some explicit content that will create degeneracy and delusion. Check the image below:
This is from a famous manga called Chainsaw Man. Here main protagonist, Denji, becomes a dog to his crush, the antagonist, Makima. What are you supposed to learn here? This level of degeneracy is unacceptable.
To conclude, if we ignore the bad impacts, manga and graphic novels are a great source of learning something new such as wise quotes or new invention or something surprisingly unique. It can be anything! As long as people read these books they will understand the importance of reading books.
